Project Description :

The Willamette National Cemetery is a U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs site located in Portland, Oregon.

The VA National Cemet eries are a resting place for our nation’s heroes and as such, the standards for construction, maintenance and appearance of these cemeteries have been established by the VA National Cemetery Administration (NCA) to reflect this nation’s concerns and respe ct for those interred there. National Cemeteries are National Shrines. TSI was honored to provide design and construction services for DVA . Work included the remov al of existing decomposed granite paving and pour ing a 4” thick sidewalk al ong three columbaria wall sites. TSI was also responsible for removing and disposing of approximately 70 CY of decomposed concrete . TSI surveyed and verified a minimum 4” aggregate base is in place before performing compa ction. Work also include d the const ruction of a new 4” colored concrete sidewalk with light surface retarder to create an exposed aggregate finish to match with the surrounding concrete sidewalks . Any landscape removed during this process was replaced accordingly

Our Team:

  • Our field te am covered columbaria walls to prevent damage during construction
  • Provide d b est m anagement p ractice s (BMP s ) by installin g silt fence to prevent runoff debris mixing with nearby creek per SWPPP guid elines
  • Breaking & dispos ing of preexisting decomposed granite and concrete sidewalk.
  • Site exploration to verify sufficient 4” aggregate base to be compacted and provide thickene d concrete slab edge.
  • Constructing formwork and installing 6” x 6” wire mesh and dowels with adjacent sid ewalks to prevent hair cracks in concrete
  • Pouring approximately 140 CY of 3000 PSI 3/8” exposed concrete mix. Spray surface retardant and perform surfa ce retarding operation to obtain specified finish.
  • Construction activities were split into 3 crews to keep sidewalk construction consistent without closing all columbaria sites: demolition crew, concrete pouring crew and surface finishing crew
